How to clean up stress and avoid burnout

Feeling unusually tired? At the same time as being restless? Do you have trouble sleeping, feel irritable and unfocused, find your body aching and writhing? Then you are probably burning out. These are the first signs that you're cracking at the seams from too much stress.

The demands of both work and private life are increasing, everything is moving faster, there is more to keep track of, and on top of that, working very hard is seen as an achievement to brag about. But we are only human, and we have our limitations. If we ride the red for too long, our bodies will tell us off. And then the backlash of overwork can feel hard and long. More and more people are burning out, often people under 30, and once the body and mind give up in earnest, it can take years to get back on track. Health is the most important thing we have. Without the drive or desire to do something, career and other things in life mean nothing. Life is for living, having fun, creating, growing. There are a number of things you can do to take care of yourself and keep burnout at bay:

  • Clean up and create balance in your life. Clear out the people and situations that steal your energy, and replenish them with those that bring you joy and pleasure.
  • Take care of your body. Eat healthily. Exercise and move, and choose a way that you enjoy (if you forget that you're exercising because it's so much fun, you're in the right place). Get plenty of sleep. Skip that last slumber hour before bed, turn off all the screens and hug the pillow instead. Listen carefully to what your body is saying - when it comes to our wellbeing, it's usually smarter than us.
  • Think of yourself. Sure, we should help and listen to each other, but you are the most important person in your life. Do what you're passionate about and love, and don't give a damn what others think.

Perhaps most importantly, ask for help. You don't have to do everything yourself. Plan and delegate. Things may be moving faster now more, especially in the workplace, but with progress comes not only demands - a lot of helpful solutions are appearing too. The trick to feeling good at work when the going gets tough is to work smarter, not harder. New unique services can fix your stressful worries, taking over urgent and tedious tasks so you have the time and peace of mind to do what you love most about your job.
